Frequently Asked Questions

What does tempeh taste like?

Simply delicious! 🙂 Depending on the legume used, tempeh tastes slightly different and has a different texture. Generally speaking, tempeh has a delicate, nutty, mushroomy flavor. Tempeh also absorbs flavors and marinades wonderfully. You can get creative in the kitchen!

Is tempeh gluten-free?

Yes, our tempeh is gluten-free.
We only state that traces of gluten may be present, as this information is provided by the farmers. There is no gluten-containing source on the farm.

However, please always check the ingredient list on the packaging to make sure that everything is suitable for you.

What is the difference to tofu?

Tempeh isn't really comparable to tofu; it has a firmer texture and a natural, distinctive flavor that varies depending on the legume used. Furthermore, tempeh is fermented and contains many minerals and antioxidants that benefit your gut microbiome.

If you're already cooking with tofu, you can use its preparation method as a guide. Tempeh is very versatile, can take on all sorts of marinades and flavors, and can be fried, baked, steamed, deep-fried, or grilled.

How do I prepare tempeh correctly?

When frying tempeh in a pan, use medium heat – not full power! We've seen some things happen… 😉 Tempeh browns beautifully and develops its full flavor if you give it a little time. You can also steam, bake, fry, or grill it…

Tempeh goes well with salads, as a soup ingredient, in wraps, in curries, as a taco filling, in casseroles, vegetable stir-fries and much more.

If you like it really quick and easy, try deglazing it with a splash of soy sauce!

Aren't all nutrients lost during pasteurization?

No, only the probiotics (microorganisms) are lost during the heating process of pasteurization; unfortunately, this cannot be changed. Your tempeh is still full of beneficial nutrients, fiber, and minerals.

What is the best way to store tempeh?

Tempeh must be stored in the refrigerator at a maximum temperature of 7°C. However, it can also be frozen very well without any change in taste.

Is it normal for my tempeh to have dark spots?

Dark spots on the tempeh are the natural spores of the mushroom at its mature age and are completely harmless.
If you are unsure, please feel free to contact us and we will help you.

How long does tempeh keep?

Our pasteurized tempeh will keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. You can also find all storage information on the packaging.

Isn't there a cheaper way to ship it?

Unfortunately, not yet. We ship your tempeh chilled in a well-insulated cardboard box with paper padding to ensure it arrives fresh.

The shipping costs of €6.90 cover only the shipping provider's fee – we cover the costs for packaging and cooling materials. Fresh quality has its price – but we do everything we can to keep it as fair as possible. Shipping is free for orders over €50.

Alternatively, you can also visit us at various weekly markets in Hamburg, or have your tempeh delivered by bicycle.

What about sustainability?

Sustainable practices are very important to us. We want to contribute to a better world with our products as best we can. We are constantly striving to review and improve our processes. In the future, we would like to support sustainable projects with every sale of our products and donate a portion of our profits.

We source our raw materials from non-conventional agriculture as regionally as possible; this keeps transport routes short, protects the environment and supports small producers.

We are part of the dual system "Green Dot" and work with green electricity.

Our product packaging is currently made of plastic. As our production and therefore the quantities of packaging materials we purchase increase, it will be possible to switch to compostable bags.

We also prioritize sustainability when it comes to delivery: If you order tempeh within Hamburg, we deliver by bicycle, protecting the environment and giving our legs a good workout ;)

How is tempeh made?

Tempeh is the generic term for a type of fermentation. Simply put, legumes are cultivated together with a mold over a specific period – similar to the ripening process of cheese. During this process, many nutrients are broken down, resulting in a firm, sliceable block: tempeh.

Our tempeh is handcrafted by us. After the ripening period, the tempeh is gently pasteurized and preserved, vacuum-packed and labeled, and is then ready for shipping or delivery to your home by bicycle.

We love to experiment. That's why, in addition to our basic range, we regularly offer limited-edition tempeh products with special extras like sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, or even cacao nibs. You can find the current limited edition in our shop.
